Ukraine
The human suffering caused by the events taking place in Ukraine is impossible to measure.
Even still, the people of Ukraine are defying all odds as they resist and endure the brutal assault on their country. Their story is a story of courage, resilience, and love.
Adam and I believe that one of the most important jobs of an artist is to stand up for people who are struggling. We also believe that art can change the world by fostering belonging and inclusion.
And sometimes the job of the artist isn’t so polite. Sometimes our job is to confront injustice and provoke change whether those in power like it or not. As John Lewis said, to “make good trouble”.
Right now, we think it’s time to do both.
The events on the ground are changing every minute but by today’s estimates, nearly 7 million refugees have poured out of Ukraine into neighboring countries. That’s more people than live in Norway.
Cameras for Kids
We have peacebuilding friends working all over Europe with much of their efforts now turned towards support for folks who have fled Ukraine. This is mostly moms and kids and grandparents. We have been asked to lend specific support to friends in Moldova and Romania.
An issue that is often overlooked is the impact that forced migration has on children. One of the ways we can help migrating children is an initiative we are calling Cameras for Kids.
Younger children don’t have the cognitive ability to process their experiences by telling stories. Therefore, art and play therapy are used to help kids process trauma. We’re not equipped, nor is it appropriate, to do therapy with children while they are still in traumatizing circumstances.
However, we can empower kids by introducing them to therapeutic photography. When a child takes a photograph, it often gives them the sense of being in control of the chaotic world around them.
Through sponsors and donations, we intend to give inexpensive kid-friendly cameras to as many kids as we can. The photos taken will belong to the children and their families and they can choose to share them or not, as they wish.
